A statement, a contract, or a form often carries an account number, a signature, or a name that should not go any further once you share the file. Redacting it before sending removes that detail from the document entirely, instead of trusting the reader to ignore it.
Drawing a shape does not touch the file yet. Only when you click Generate Redacted PDF does the tool render every page as an image, paint your shapes solid black directly into it, and rebuild the document from those flattened pages with pdf-lib.
A rectangle covers a line of text or a signature block cleanly, while a circle suits a photo, a stamp, or a rounded logo. Pick either from the toolbar before drawing, and switch freely between shapes as you work through a document.
Deciding what to black out means reading every page first, which is often the most sensitive part of handling a document. Doing that inside your browser, instead of uploading the file to a remote server just to draw a box, means the content is never exposed to anyone else in the process.
It genuinely removes it. When you generate the file, every page is re-rendered as a flat image with your shapes painted solid black directly into the pixels, then reassembled into a new PDF. There is no separate overlay sitting on top of live text that could be moved, deleted, or seen through.
Yes. The toolbar above the page stack has both a rectangle and a circle option. Pick one before you draw; switching afterward only changes the shape of the next new one you draw, not any shape you already placed.
Yes. Click a shape to select it, then drag any of its four corner handles to resize it or drag its body to move it. A small delete button also appears on the selected shape if you want to remove it instead.
Flattening every page to an image is what makes the removal real instead of cosmetic. A movable overlay box can be deleted or dragged aside by anyone who opens the file, and the text underneath is still there in the document's data. Rendering the page as a picture with the shape baked into it removes that risk entirely. The tradeoff is genuine: the rest of the document, not just the redacted area, is no longer selectable or searchable text, and the file is larger than the original.
