A password is sensitive data in its own right, arguably more sensitive than the document it protects. That's why local password handling matters even more here than in a typical file conversion, and every step of locking or unlocking a PDF happens entirely inside your browser.
Your Password Never Leaves Your Device
The password you type is used only inside a local Web Worker to run QPDF's encryption or decryption. It is never transmitted, logged, or stored anywhere, including by us.
Encryption Runs Entirely On-Device
QPDF, the same open-source engine many professional PDF tools rely on, runs compiled to WebAssembly inside your browser tab. Your PDF's bytes never reach any server.
Processing Happens Off the Main Thread
Locking or unlocking runs inside a background Web Worker, so the page stays responsive instead of freezing while QPDF works, even on larger files.
No Password Guessing, Ever
If you enter the wrong password to remove protection, QPDF simply reports failure and the tool tells you so. We never attempt to guess, brute-force, or retry with variations.
Files Never Stored Temporarily
After your protected or unprotected copy downloads, every trace of the source file and the password is cleared from memory. Nothing is cached or written to disk.
No Trace of Your Session
We do not record which files you protect or unlock, the password you used, or when you used the tool. Your session disappears without a trace.
Contracts, tax documents, medical records, and financial statements are routinely shared as PDF attachments over email or messaging apps, channels that were never designed to keep a file private once it leaves your outbox. A password turns a PDF from “anyone who gets a copy can open it” into “only someone who knows the password can open it”, which matters most for exactly the documents people forward without thinking twice.
Removing a password strips the encryption layer QPDF applied when the file was protected, using the password you supply to prove you're allowed to do so. Nothing about the underlying pages, text, images or fonts changes. This is different from “recovering” or “cracking” a password: it only works when you already know the correct one.
Uploading a PDF to a converter risks exposing that one document. Uploading a password to an online tool risks exposing a credential you may reuse elsewhere, and it means trusting a stranger's server with the exact string standing between your document and anyone who finds it. Running QPDF locally, inside a Web Worker on your own device, means the password is used once, in memory, and then it's gone.
256-bit AES is the same encryption standard used to protect classified government data and is the strongest option QPDF, and the PDF specification itself, currently support. Its practical weak point is never the algorithm, it's password strength: a short or common password is far easier to guess than the encryption is to break.
A password is more sensitive than the document it protects, since it's a credential rather than a one-off file. Smallpdf and PDF24's browser-based online protect-PDF tools work by uploading your file, which means your password is sent along with it to apply the protection server-side. ZeroCloudPDF runs the real QPDF engine, compiled to WebAssembly, inside a Web Worker on your own device, so neither your file nor your password is ever sent anywhere.

Your PDF and the password you enter exist in your browser's memory only for the seconds it takes QPDF to run, inside a Web Worker so the page never freezes. Once your protected or unprotected copy downloads, both are gone.
This tool cannot recover or bypass a forgotten password. Removing protection requires the correct existing password, entered by you. If you don't know it, there is no way around it here, and there shouldn't be, since that is exactly what a password is for. We never attempt to guess or brute-force a password.
