The pages you're numbering may already be a signed contract, an ID scan, or a financial statement, so local processing matters here just as much as for the document itself. Every step of adding page numbers, from the live preview to the final download, happens entirely inside your browser.
Your PDF Never Leaves Your Device
Both the live preview and the final numbered file are generated using pdf.js and pdf-lib running in your browser tab. Your document's bytes are never transmitted anywhere, including to us.
The Live Preview Runs Locally Too
Seeing page 1 update as you adjust options doesn't require a round trip to any server. pdf.js renders it directly on your device, the same way the final file is generated.
Why Local Processing Matters Here
A document worth numbering for reference is often one you'd rather not hand to a stranger's server, even briefly. Running pdf-lib on your own device means the file's content is never exposed in transit.
No Page Content Read or Analyzed
pdf-lib only writes new text onto each page to place the number. It doesn't parse, extract, or analyze the existing text, images, or layout already on your pages.
Files Never Stored Temporarily
After your numbered copy downloads, the source file is cleared from memory. Nothing about it is cached or written to disk on our end at any point.
No Log of What You Number
We do not record which files you number, the options you chose, or when you used the tool. Anonymous Google Analytics tracks site visits only, never file content or tool activity.
Multi-page contracts, reports and academic papers are far easier to navigate, print and reference when every page carries a number. It lets a colleague say “see page 4” in a meeting, keeps a printed stack in order if it's dropped, and is often a plain requirement for court filings, theses and formal submissions that arrive without one.
Bottom-center or bottom-right is the most common placement for reports and books, since it sits below the body text without competing with a header. Top placement is more common in business and legal documents that already use a footer for something else, like a case number or confidentiality notice.
These three map directly to the standard fonts built into the PDF specification itself, so the number displays correctly in any PDF viewer without ZeroCloudPDF having to embed extra font files in your download. Helvetica suits modern sans-serif documents, Times New Roman matches traditional serif reports, and Courier fits technical or code-heavy files.
Adding page numbers is a small edit, but it still means opening and rewriting a document that may contain sensitive content. Doing that inside your browser with pdf-lib, instead of uploading the file to a remote server just to stamp a number on it, means the document's content is never exposed to anyone else in the process.

Yes. A page number is drawn as new text on top of each page, so it doesn't depend on the page already containing selectable text. Scanned documents and image-based PDFs get numbered exactly the same way as text-based ones.
Every real page in the document is numbered when you click Add Page Numbers & Save PDF. There's currently no option to skip specific pages or start counting from a page other than the first.
